About Green Mountain Fulgurites

Green Mountain Fulgurites is proud to offer these incredibly rare formations from the Green Mountain state of Vermont. Most people have never seen a Fulgurite and they are far from common. Fulgurites are natural tubes or crusts of glass formed by the fusion of silica (quartz) sand or rock from a lightning strike. They can be very difficult to locate if you don't know what to look for.

The glassy fusion of sand was a hint of what may be found underneath the surface. When lightning with a temperature of at least 1,800 °C (3,270 °F) fuses the sand together, the cooled product is known as Fulgurite. Its shape mimics that of the lightening bolt that formed it.

Inside the rough exterior is a beautiful, energized glass. It can be many different colors depending on the sand or rock that it was formed from. We carry varying colors of green, greenish yellow and lighter off-whites.

Although we have many smaller fragments, we also have some unusually large pieces. You can see the scale in reference to the coin in the image. These larger pieces are not for sale but are available for loan to a museum.

Thank you for visiting Green Mountain Fulgurites. We hope you find something beautiful here. Please visit our online store to see what pieces we have available for sale!
